Sarracenia New Hybrids Mixed (Pitcher Plant)
Number of seeds per packet: 15.
A half hardy perennial, attractive, carnivorous plant attracting insects with a nectar-like secretion on the lip of the pitchers, as well as a combination of colour and scent.
Slippery footing at the pitcher’s rim, causes insects to fall inside, where they die and are digested by the plant as a nutrient source.
Sow seeds on the surface of pots filled with moist sphagnum moss peat compost. Do not cover the seeds. Sit the pots in a tray of water and place this into a propagator or warm place, and keep at a temperature of around 25-27°C. After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination.
When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5m pots then pot on as required into 13cm and finally 20cm pots, always using a moist water retentive compost.
These plants love a moist atmosphere so standing the pots in a saucer of water is the easiest way to achieve this.
Grow on in a light position either in a frost free greenhouse or conservatory and stand outside during the summer on a patio and watch them catch flies.
It can take 2-3 years before plants are big enough to catch insects.
