Cherry (Prunus) ‘Stella’
Price: Fan-trained: £67.50 and bush: £42.50
Pot size: 12 litre.
A self-fertile (so does not need a pollinator) eating cherry that comes either as a fan-trained tree (Colt rootstock) or a bush (Gisela 5 rootstock). It has large dark red, reliable, sweet juicy cherries with a good flavour. Pick late July.
This variety also has an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. Prefers a deep, moist but well-drained soil in full sun. It has white flowers from April to May. Grows to an eventual height of 2.5-4 metres and spread 2.5-4 metres. British-grown.
Fan-trained trees have their branches splayed out like a fan and also need to be planted against a wall or fence or similar structure.
A bush fruit tree is a freestanding tree. It has a short (between 60-80cms) straight trunk when planted before the initial branches that form a rounded crown eventually. Once planted it will grow from the ends of its branches while the trunk stays the same height.
