Ground cover plants to help suppress the weeds

Posted on September 14, 2016 by Potter & Rest

Ground cover plants grow together to form a dense layer of vegetation; this helps to suppress weed growth and offers a low maintenance approach.

When selecting trees and shrubs for a low maintenance garden, go for species that grow at a slow pace and keep their shape naturally, without the need for pruning or training.

Smaller evergreens, especially dwarf conifers and daphnes, can be planted relatively closely together too and this helps reduce weeds as well.

When selecting your ground cover plants, think of all four seasons and create a planting plan to ensure you have interest all year around.

Here are our recommendations for seasonal ground cover plants to go for:

  • Japanese anemones
  • Cotoneaster
  • Liriope muscari
  • Persicaria
  • Rodgersia

Winter

Spring
  • Epimedium
  • Trachystemon
  • Vinca minor (periwinkles)
