Plant to prevent floods

Posted on December 30, 2015 by Potter & Rest

Our gardening guru Peter Burks, gives his top tips on how to help prevent flooding with some thoughtful planting:

“When planning to replace or put in new surfaces at your property choose something that allows water to drain through it, such as gravel, porous asphalt or permeable concrete block paving.

“Think about redirecting rainwater to a lawn or border where it can drain away naturally too.

“Designate an area to be made into a rain garden. A rain garden is a depression, which allows rainwater to run from an impermeable surface where it can be slowly soaked into the ground or flow to a drain.

“The area could be planted up with moisture-loving plants such as ferns, hostas or marsh marigold.”
