Posted on September 12, 2014 by Potter & Rest

In the deepest depths of a cold winter there is one type of plant that will keep producing colour in your garden…the evergreen. They are a must for all gardens if you want year round colour and can provide a great backdrop to your garden, as well as being very easy to look after.

Here are our top picks of the best evergreens available now to give you all year round foliage colour.

Holly Fern

A British-grown, evergreen fern.

Prefers partial to full shade and a moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil.

It is fully hardy and is called a holly fern due to its distinctive shaped fronds.

This fern looks particularly attractive among other ferns or woodland plants in a shady border.

Cupressus macrocarpa ‘Goldcrest’

‘Goldcrest’ is a narrow column-shaped, evergreen conifer with bright golden-yellow foliage.

This conifer loves full sun and is happy in any position, as long as it is sheltered from cold, drying winds, and in any soil type, but it does like a well-drained soil.

Tolerates dry conditions and great for coastal gardens. It can be used for hedging.

Craigieburn Euphorbia

Craigieburn Euphorbia is perfect for all year round interest.

This stylish evergreen has dark reddy/purple foliage 12 months of the year with greeny-yellow flowers in late spring.

It is a perennial that has an eventual height and spread of 45cm x 45cm. It is fully hardy and can be planted in a sunny or shady spot in a well-drained soil.

Euonymus japonicus ‘Kathy’

This small frost hardy evergreen shrub has attractive glossy greyish-green foliage edged with a silvery-white margin that gives interest all year round.

It is perfect for containers or a sheltered border and can be trimmed to the required size and shape.

It has white/green flowers in the summer. Plant in well-drained humus-rich soil in a sunny or lightly-shaded position sheltered from cold winds. Protect plants in containers over winter.

Daphne odora Rebecca

This is a new variety from the very popular Daphne family.

Everyone knows them for their amazing, sweet scented flowers in early spring, which Rebecca has in abundance.

Dark pink buds open to light pink flowers with a beautiful strong sweet fragrance. But its foliage is what makes it stand out from other Daphne’s. Being evergreen with a strong, bright, golden variegation, it is sure to brighten up any garden all year round.

Nandina domestica ‘Obsession’

A compact bush with handsome foliage that is also known as the ‘heavenly bamboo’.

This evergreen shrub grows to an eventual height of 70cm and spreads to 60cm. It has lance-shaped leaves that are a bright, fiery red when they are young in the spring, turning to dark green flushed red in summer and dark green in autumn and winter.

Its small white flowers, appearing in clusters, in the summer are also pretty. It prefers a position in full sun or partial shade with a moist, well-drained soil. It is frost hardy but may need protection in the winter in cold areas and harsher conditions than normal.

This attractive shrub provides all year round interest and is perfect for patio pots or borders.
